Submissions
Jesus Radicals (JR) welcomes reader submissions–articles, essays, poems, works of satire, short stories, etc. exploring the way of Jesus in the shadow of Empire. In particular, we are looking for pieces that seek to undermine systems of oppression and/or creatively explore possibilities for liberation from an anarchist perspective. We also love good radical theology.
Submit your article in .doc format via email to submissions [at] jesusradicals.com with “Jesus Radicals Submission” in the subject line.
In addition to your submission, please include a one-paragraph bio. We also prefer that writers include a profile picture along with their submission.
Please read the following guidelines before submitting your work:
- Word length is flexible, but please don’t send us articles that would take more than 5-10 minutes to read (we prefer pieces that are 300-1000 words). Serial articles are acceptable, but we generally prefer that you submit the series in its entirety within the same day. We reserve the right to edit for length and clarity.
- Writing style should be conversational, rather than academic. In other words, we’d prefer that you avoid using lingo that only folks with advanced degrees can understand.
- We prefer gender-inclusive, gender-neutral, or gender-balanced language in reference to humans and God. We recognize the tradition of calling God “Father” and traditional Trinitarian language. However we also believe that using alternative language for God respects a wide range of perspectives on who God is and how God relates to creation. As a result, the editor(s) reserve the right to revise submissions to reflect multiple images of God depending on the topic.
- JR is interested in publishing articles on radical ideas, praxis, spirituality, cultural critique, politics, satire, book reviews, CD reviews, and works of fiction that have spiritual/economic/political themes. JR wants thought provoking content that will help readers explore the social, political, and spiritual implications of following the way of Jesus.
- We try to publish several articles a week on the website. If a submission is rejected, please do not get discouraged about sending future work. There are a number of reasons we may decide to pass on an article–quality isn’t our only concern. One thing we will absolutely not publish, however, is any article that advocates the killing of human or non-human animals. Time constraints do not allow us to respond to you with reasons why a particular piece may have been rejected. Previous success in getting a submission posted does not guarantee publication of future work.
- Please do proofread your work before sending it in: check your grammar, spelling, look for typos, etc. The more editing we have to do, the longer it takes for us to post your work … if we decide to at all. We don’t mind fixing problems after a piece has been posted, but it can be a pain.
- We will try to fact check articles as time permits, but time is limited, so please fact check your work.
- It is understood that articles published on JR do not necessarily reflect the views of its editors or all contributing writers. Conversely, statements and positions by the editor do not necessarily reflect the views of JR’s contributing writers. Jesus Radicals seeks to engage in conversation with different voices and perspectives within the radical/anarchist Christian community and to that end we accept articles from kindred spirits that elicit conversation and that challenge us as readers and organizers. That said, the viewpoints shared in these articles are not necessarily representative of any “official Jesus Radicals” position.
- Writers retain full copyright control of their work. We will take down articles upon the author’s request.
Thank you for submitting with us!
